Working for Free

Writing in Daily Kos, Laura Clawson reports some interesting – and troubling – speculation about what might be in the President’s job speech next week.  Rumors have President Obama endorsing the “Georgia Works” job training program.  What could be wrong with a job training program?  How about making people work and not paying them.  Participants are paid through unemployment funds.  The employer gets free labor.  Who’s the winner here?

Clawson notes that the unions are opposing this plan.  I don’t know what good that will do.  Our President seems deaf to union pleas.  I hope this report is not true.  Companies – not the government – should pay people who work for them. They should also hire people, not using training as a gimmick to get free labor.  Have we taken welfare from the poor and given it to corporations?
