Angela,

Thanks for your comment, which I appreciate. However, I am not advising people to quit job their until they have found a new one. I don't agree with you that a bad job should be guarded "like a precious jewel." Instead, we should treat employers the same way they treat us. When they don't need a worker, we get laid off. My advice is to find a new job and lay off any company that treats you badly. We need to treat ourselves and our lives as the real precious jewel.

Live with courage,

Clay

With the recession still with us, we have to be very careful about how we react to our boss' request. Gone are the days when finding someone to take your place was hard. Now there are literally hundreds of qualified people out there ready and willing to step in if you refuse to do the duties you are being asked for. It is sad, but not many of us can afford to lose our jobs right now. I would caution anyone with a job to guard it like a precious jewel. And yes, there may be times when you need to quit and seek legal action. But be very sure that this is the route to take before taking it. Now is not the time to be homeless - the shelters are full! Career Counseling

Renting office space is a great alternative to working from home because you still have somewhere to 'go' and you can 'leave' work. I do agree that when you work from home you are always available to work even at the weekends, however if you set up a home office, you just have to train yourself to shut the door and leave the work for tomorrow. I don't think it is the ideal solution but it definitely does have its benefits.

Good advice. As a "survivor" of 77 jobs, I agree that it's crucial not to give up. I've been lucky--it always seemed that I got the job I needed (and sometimes the job I wanted!) just at the right time.

It's taken me nearly 60 years to find the job I love, but now I can honestly say I have it!

So keep on searching until you find what you want.

Nice post. Thanks!

I'm obviously a hunter, in temperament and probably ancestry (W. African slaves, Cherokee). My half-Cherokee grandma was even surnamed Hunter. My favorite jobs are those where I get to move around: door-to-door sales (that job was all-weather, just like mail carrier), roving reporter, server... When I'm in an office job I often prefer standing at my desk to sitting! (I noted in a C-SPAN profile on Donald Rumsfeld that he has a stand-up desk in his Pentagon office. Good idea... Not that I was a fan of his work.)

Nico,

I am not recommending that the cover letter be "broad" or "unspecifc." It should describe your selling points in a concise, focused way that drives the reader/employer to call you and set up an interview. A cover letter should not be a rehash of your resume. It should introduce you and your resume in a way that is, to quote you Nico, "strongly relevant."

Thanks for reading,

Clay

Dear Clay Cerny, I think some readers might have different opinions with regards to the broad nature that you say a cover letter should be. Being unspecific, the cover letter may not stand out as it could look like the other candidates'. Moreover, due to time constraint, if they find your cover letter is not strongly relevant, they might not read your resume. Please let me know your view on this.
